THINK
GLOBALLY,
ACT LOCALLY
Niños y Crías means "Kids and Critters" in English... and that's who we work with. Niños y Crías has many projects going on at any one time around the Yucatan Peninsula. We're involved with educating children and their parents about the environment. We are all about participation in tracking and observing wildlife, especially flamingos and other birds. And we are active participants in the restoration of habitats for birds and other creatures.
We've got a lot going on, and you are welcome to participate. Explore our website and learn more about us!
Welcome to Niños y Crias!
We are a non-profit organization, established in 1999.
We got our start in the sands of the Ria Lagartos
Biosphere, and our main objective is to give life
and continuity to local environmental education programs,
to help conserve local jungle and water habitats, to
rehabilitate disturbed ecosystems and to develop sustainable
human communities to support the ecosystems.
We decided that it is very important to learn to conserve nature from a very young age, and for this reason, we focus on a very important sector of the public: the CHILDREN.
If we can sensitize and educate those who in the future will be responsible for the health of the planet, we will be forming human beings capable of acting on behalf of the environment. By doing this, we will fulfill the mission that is what we work for every day: “Learn to conserve Nature”.

Successful return of flamingos to nest in the Yucatan
Last year flamingos in Yucatan did not nest, because of the dry climate conditions, but during this season flamingos are nesting again in the Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve in a salt pond located within the Salt Industry of Yucatan known as ¨ La Esperanza ¨.
This is the first time in the history of the flamingo conservation program in Yucatan that a large colony nests in a salt pond. In 2007, 80 pairs reproduced successfully in this area. Currently, an 8,000 pair colony is settled along a sandbar which stretches into a dyke, approximately 2m high over the water mirror of the pond.
The permanent custody of the colony, the abundance of natural food sources and the control of factors such as the water level, have been determinant in the successful reproduction of these birds.
Participate and support our program attending the banding round-up, August 22nd. Please register soon, since a limited number of spaces is available. For more information contact: anamorales@ninosycrias.org.mx
We have good news for you!
We gave ourselves the assignment of creating a new educational program, one that would help teach an ethics of caring for the environment and would create children and adults who feel more responsibility for the natural world around them. The result is La Caravana de Niños y Crías (the Kids ‘n Critters Caravan). Read more in our July bulletin: Boletín Informativo de Julio
Niños y Crías has begun a campaign to renew the use of traditional cloth bags in the Yucatan. Click here to see a presentation about the dangers of using plastic bags. Do you want to do social service, help with environmental education? Come to Niños y Crías and participate with us! (Click here for information about La Caravana)

Migratory Bird Day
The second consecutive Migratory Bird Day celebration will take place on October 16th and 17th. This year it will be held in Río Lagartos Port.
Year after year, different bird species arrive to our state since mid-July in search for food and more favorable climate conditions for their survival.
The true meaning of this event is to promote bird conservation, creating awareness about the importance of preserving our ecosystems, as well as having fun. All this through activities that will take place with groups of children-teen birdwatchers and birding moms from the participating communities of: El Cuyo, San Felipe, Río Lagartos and Celestún. Amongst the activities that will take place are: a mini birdathon with the support of local nature guides, and a small forest fair.
Please join us, and bring your binoculars to participate in this great celebration!
